Album Review Help Needed (part 1)

Yes, this is my blog, but I'd like to keep it constant and updated with nice album and song reviews.

I need song-to-song reviews of the following QUEEN albums -

Queen
Queen II
Sheer Heart Attack
A Night At The Opera
A Day At The Races

.... You will be given credit, of course, and I'll deeply appreciate it as I don't have much time to do many album reviews.

E-mail the reviews to jakebritt01@queenzone.com

Thanks!

Great Queen/Queen related websites

There are literally MILLIONS of sites dedicated to Queen and their band members. Most are the usual fan sites with common information, some photos, and mini biographies. But here's a list of some important and great Queen websites.

www.queenpedia.com

Queenpedia is probably the BEST Queen site out there. It features most of the albums and singles ever released on the site, as well as photographs of most. It features lyrics, interviews, quotes, musicians/producers/engineers/etc. who've worked with Queen on Queen projects or solo projects, it lists support bands, and a nice biography about the band. It's in the same style as Wikipedia basically, so it's very easy to navigate, yet sophisticated at the same time.

www.queenconcerts.com

Queenconerts is a great site if you want to know when and where Queen and their solo members have performed life concerts (even before they were a part of Queen). It will tell you if the show was recorded or filmed, and even has stories of a lot of the concerts written by Queen fans who attended them.

www.QueenZone.com

QueenZone is a forum I've been sneaking up on since September 11th, 2001 (no joke). There's a lot of nut cases on the forum but basically anyone fits in, except if you are going to ask about who gave Freddie AIDS, or if you ask for photos from the last two years of Freddie's life, or if you claim you love Roger, when he's old enough to be your grandfather, or Brian in that case, or if you ask where John Deacon is... for that last one, they'll probably tell you John has been dead for some time, but that's not the case. So you definetely need a sense of humor to joint the site, and I'm telling you, you WILL be made fun of and critisised at some point, but it's all in great fun. QueenZone also has it's own private messaging system, e-mail system, and chat room. Also a nice big photo section.

Physical Vs. Digital

Why do people enjoy buying digital singles and albums? The only purpose I see, is for the use of the songs being played on their computer, and then they go and put it to their iPod's, etc. Seems like a bunch of work.

Personally, I enjoy the actual physical CD or LP. Why? I love artwork on the front of album and single sleeves, plus all of the liner notes, and information on the songs. I don't like reading those liner notes on the computer, thus is why I do not get my songs on the internet. I buy CD albums, CD singles, vinyl albums, and vinyl singles. There is nothing better than holding a vinyl album or single and putting it on the record player and listening to it. The same goes for CDs (and I never thought I'd say that!).

I remember back in 1998, when I first started buying albums with my own money, besides on the net, I could only buy cassettes at stores like Wal-Mart and K-Mart. I still like cassettes and both of my trucks have a cassette player instead of a CD player, so that works for my vehicles. Around 2000, everything in the store switched to CD and you could practically buy any album in the store on CD, not just compilation albums. Now all those big name stores only stock new releases or compilation albums (ie... Greatest Hits, The Best Of's). Still, that is okay.

If you want a new album, you can go buy one and when you bring it home, you can put all the songs onto your computer within a minute, it's as easy as that. Not to mention, in the liner notes, you can read who played what instruments, who produced, who wrote what songs, do you get the picture?

Now, out of all three (cassette/CD/vinyl), I prefer vinyl. No... I don't have a portable record player in my vehicles, but I do have two record players in my house, and both record players were bought brand new within the past two years. One of the record players will play CDs, vinyl, and cassette... so you can get anything. My other record player is state-of-the-art, and I can take the songs on the record and put them right onto the computer.

There are a lot of great older albums that were released only on vinyl and cassette, that are now out of print. For example, Peter Wolf's 'Lights Out!' album and Freddie Mercury's 'Mr. Bad Guy' album. Both came out in the mid 80s, and while CD copies were manufactured, they weren't popular at the time (neither was the price!), so they weren't manufactured in large quanities. While the albums sold very well, they have gone out of print. Peter Wolf's album on CD format, sells for around $80.00 - $120.00. Very pricey, and I've yet to get a hold of it. This is one reason that I enjoy a record player... I can play the LP.

Not many kids nowadays know what a single is. I probably wouldn't either if it wasn't for my big obsession with Queen. Anyways, when a band wants to promote a certain song for an album which in return will most likely get the people to buy the album in which it's on, they release a single. It can be on vinyl... 7" and 12" vinyls being the most popular out of vinyl, or on CD, or cassettes. Singles usually have two - three songs on it. What's great about singles, is that a lot of the times, they either have a different version or mix of the song, plus songs that won't even appear on the album (B-sides). Queen released numerous singles featuring extended versions of the songs, remixes, live versions, and non-album tracks.

7" singles seem to becoming a lot more popular, bands like My Chemical Romance usually release their singles on CD as well as on 7" vinyl. You can still and probably will always be able to buy record players. People always complain that it's hard to keep a record clean, but to be honest, I have more problems with CDs than I do with vinyl records. I don't have any vinyl records that aren't playable, though I have hundreds of CDs with scratches and which will skip everytime I play them, or they are totally un-playable.

If you want to buy a single, Newbury Comics as well as many regular music stores, usually has a section in which has a ton of new singles released. If you want a vinyl single, eBay is usually the best place to buy one, or old record stores. I prefer the sound of vinyl more than that of CD to be honest, it's hard to describe, but it just sounds more real.

Not to mention, buying any kind of single is fun to collect, as you get more product from the band and collecting records and CDs, is a great hobby for anyone.

Try it.

My Chemical Romance - I Don't Love You (Song Review)

I've been a fan of My Chemical Romance since they released the song 'Welcome To The Black Parade' as a single during the end of 2006. But I only listened to them when they played the song on the radio... but then I heard they were releasing a new song as a single.

And that's when I really got hooked to "MCR"... when they released 'I Don't Love You' in April of 2007. Since I thought Welcome To The Black Parade was a good song, I instantly thought I might as well check out the new video of 'I Don't Love You' on Youtube and see what I think. About ten seconds into the song, I knew it was the best thing released in the 2000's. I fell in love with their music, basically.

The video was filmed in black and white and MCR lead singer, Gerard Way, had a haircut and dyed his hair back to black. The video was very sophisticated, romantic, and an in a world in which I wish I could live in. But the song is even better! Since the single wasn't released in the USA, I bought two different 7" singles of the song. One had 'Cancer (Live)' as a B-side and the other single had 'House Of Wolves (Live)' as a B-side. I never pass down an opportunity to listen to 'I Don't Love You'.

The lyrics to I Don't Love You, are so meaningful to me. I envy Gerard Way's lyrics to that song. Sometimes think about my life in terms with lyrics in that song, such as "Would you even turn to say, I don't love you, like I did, yesterday?"... I mean, it's the questioning of one's love for another. Gerard wasn't singing that he doesn't love someone, he was asking someone if they'd even admit that they don't love him like they used to. To me, it's a very sad and emotional song. And the music on the song, is so great too. The guitar intro, and the harmonies of vocals in background during the chorus, and just the melody itself is great. I even learned to play the damn song on the piano, it means that much to me.

It's MCR's first "love song" or "power ballad" and currently, I've heard, they are back in the recording studio recording another album. Hopefully they can fit in another ballad like that. I also hope they start releasing albums more often. Every two or three years, is way too long to wait for a studio album, in my opinion.

Don't be afraid to buy album 'The Black Parade' .... or the single to 'I Don't Love You' (on eBay). The album is NOT emo. The song isn't emo. It's emotional, yes, but not the suicidal/cut myself kind of music. Trust me, you'll enjoy the songs. Very Queen-like. Queen also happen to be Gerard's favorite band.

Smash Mouth

Back in my SECOND year of 5th grade, in 1999, during the springtime there was a song that every kid seemed to be singing. It was a song called 'All Star' that all the cool kids enjoyed. I remember those days quite well, and they seemed to be the best of my life. The song was by a California band known as Smash Mouth. They had a lot of success, I wouldn't call them a household name (even though the song was known in most households), but a lot of great bands eventually go down hill. The album featuring 'All Star' was titled Astro Lounge, and since then, Smash Mouth, once a band rollin' out the hits, has dwindled to losing it's original drummer, second drummer, and third drummer, playing county fairs, and losing it's original lead guitarist and song writer.

SUMMER GIRL

I've been a member of the www.SmashMouth.com website forum for a long time. In 2006, to our surprise, Smash Mouth FINALLY released an album. All of us fans had heard bits from the album they were going to release, which was titled 'Old Habits' and all the songs had a nice rock vibe to it. BUT, Smash Mouth cut the contract to their label (Interscope) and re-did the album and added and ommitted some tracks, and a new album, Summer Girl, was released on September 19th, 2006. Hardly anyone except fans knew about it, as there were NO music videos, and NO retail singles. The songs 'So Insane' and 'Everyday Superhero' were released as promo singles to big city radio stations in hopes of airplay. The album sold about 6,000 copies. For a couple weeks, only in the biggest cities, could you find 'So Insane' and 'Everyday Superhero' being played on the radio. That's what usually happens when big bands decide to go indie. I must mention that when they re-recorded and/or mixed the songs from 'Old Habits' to be on 'Summer Girl', they gave them a much more poppier arrangement. Smash Mouth lead vocalist, Steve Harwell, was also having a cocaine addiction at the time as he later admitted to.

In 2008, lead guitarist/keyboardist/song writer Greg Camp, left Smash Mouth to pursue a solo career. Greg Camp has often been said to be Smash Mouth's "Brian Wilson" while Steve Harwell is Smash Mouth's "Mike Love"... as Greg is the genious in the band who can write songs, while Steve is the one with a big taste for commercial sounding songs, and is basically in it for the money. Greg's album, though very state of the art and well crafted, didn't make the top 200 and I imagine it only sold around 1,000 copies or less. He probably gave away more copies of the album than what were sold.

Still, Summer Girl is a great album. It doesn't really contain a big 'hit' sounding song, but it's great listening none-the-less, so don't be afraid to go out and purchase it.

Album Tracks
1. The Crawl
2. Everyday Superhero
3. So Insane
4. Girl Like You
5. Getaway Car
6. Story Of My Life
7. Right Side, Wrong Bed
8. Summer Girl
9. Hey L.A.
10. Quality Control
11. Beautiful Bomb

.......... I recommend you buy this album, as it might be the last you see of a 'great' Smash Mouth album, or any Smash Mouth album at all. They do now have a new guitarist, known as Leroy, who is also a great song writer, but his songs aren't in the same category as Smash Mouth's. Though Paul Delisle is a great song writer, and Steve Harwell can write sort-of catchy songs (as long as he has a song writing team with him), I don't know if they can pull off a new album without the band's original genious, Greg Camp.

Queen - INNUENDO (Album Review)

Everyone has heard of the band, Queen, at least sophisticated people. A lot of people can sing everything lyric to songs such as 'Another One Bites The Dust' or 'We Are The Champions' ... but after Queen's Billboard #1 album 'The Game' came out in the USA in 1980, Queen could never hit the top 20 with a studio album. So here, I will discuss their 1991 album, Innuendo.

In 1990, Freddie Mercury, was dying of AIDS... literally. He had lost weight and was under constant speculation due to his gaunt, fragile, and frail appearence. He was a relcuse while reporters had tents outside his London mansion, waiting for news on his health. The band knew about his disease, mostly everyone knew. However, people had a hard time believing that this rock God, could only have a short time left. Queen released INNUENDO in 1991 and it became the last album Queen that Freddie saw released. SO, forget about their hits that all of you have heard, and get the Hell out of your house (or go onto eBay.com) and purchase the album, Innuendo.

INNUENDO
Album Tracks
1. Innuendo
2. I'm Going Slightly Mad
3. Headlong
4. I Can't Live With You
5. Ride The Wild Wind
6. All God's People
7. These Are The Days Of Our Lives
8. Delilah
9. Don't Try So Hard
10. The Hitman
11. Bijou
12. The Show Must Go On

Freddie Mercury - Lead vocals, backing vocals, keyboards
Brian May - Guitars, keyboards, backing vocals
John Deacon - Bass guitar, keyboards
Roger Taylor - Drums, percussion, keyboards, backing vocals

Note - This album is available on Hollywood Records and can be bought at all music stores. At places like Wal-Mart or K-Mart, you'll most likely have to order it in, because stores like those tend to focus on new releases or Greatest Hits compilations to rake in money.

THE STORY OF INNUENDO

"My Bohemian Rhapsody Of The '90s!"

1. INNUENDO
(Written by Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor)
The album's title track, Innuendo, is a nice big epic song. Something you'd expect from Queen in the mid 1970s. This song started off as a jam of some sort between John Deacon, Brian May, and Roger Taylor. The whole song has been basically credited to Mercury and Taylor, so who knows what they were exactly playing at the time, though it ended up as Innuendo. Anyways, Freddie was upstairs in the studio and heard them playing bits of this song and instantly came down and started singing lyrics right off the tip of his tongue.

This is the first song you'll hear on the Innuendo album, and it'll give you a wonderful taste of what Queen is all about... pure sophistication. In fact, Freddie Mercury was so excited about this song he'd brag that it's his 'Bohemian Rhapsody of the '90s'... and if you want an opinion, I prefer this song over Bohemian Rhapsody. The drums and keyboards at the beginning of the song, will grip onto your ears, no doubt. The song is kind of dark, questioning higher power such as 'God' ("If there's a God or any kind of justice under the sky, if there's a reason, if there's a point to live or die!"). Freddie is in full swing speaking his true thoughts about religion, equal rights, and the question of life and death, and the reason for exhistence.

This song was the first song on the album (released before the album, actually) to be released as a single worldwide and hit #1 on the UK music charts. The song 'Headlong' was the USA's first single, so later on, USA radio stations got a promo single of this and it hit #17 on Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks.

"I think I'm a banana tree!"

2. I'M GOING SLIGHTLY MAD
(Written by Freddie Mercury, with a little help from Peter Straker)
I'm Going Slightly Mad is total Freddie. He wrote this song late one night with his actor/musician buddy, Peter Straker. Inspired by Noel Coward one-liners and AIDS induced dementia (at least according to Kenny Everett and his ex-wife). Basically a synth driven song, it represents (in my mind) a bit of anxiety, humor, and of course, madness. Freddie sings this song through his soft natural voice, so it doesn't sound forced in any way. I can't even think of a genre of this song, it's so odd. The lyrics in this song are extremely catchy and amusing, you'll find yourself singing along to this one for sure.

Freddie and Roger were so keen on this song, that it was released as a single in Europe and parts of Asia and I'm sure other places too, except the USA. The band weren't too satisfied with the single only reaching 22 on the UK charts, but were probably satisfied with it hitting #1 in Hong Kong.

"Hoop diddy diddy - hoop diddy do!"

3. HEADLONG
(Written by Brian May)
When I was a kid, I had the Greatest Hits I & II compilation and this song scared me due to Freddie's "husky more than usual" type of voice. Anyway, this is a song Brian May considered for a solo album, but when he played it for Queen, Freddie then sang it and he knew instantly, that it was meant to be a Queen song. It features nice rocking guitar, bass, drums, and at the beginning, a bit of piano notes being played backwords to give it a 'vibration' effect. A typical May song, with some cheesy (yet catchy) lyrics, I recommend this song to anyone. In fact, I got a friend of mine hooked on Queen when he heard it blasting out of the speakers on my stereo. I gave him the UK CD Single of Headlong to him for his birthday.

The song was the first single by Queen to be released in the USA under their new contract with Hollywood Records. The fact that the song hit #3 on the USA Billboard Mainstrack Rock Tracks probably satisfied Queen, and Hollywood Records. The music video to this song, features them in the studio singing along to the song, fooling around, singing the song on a stage (a fake live performance), etc... typical Queen, but typical Queen is exciting!

"But baby I can't live without you!"

4. I CAN'T LIVE WITH YOU
(Written by Brian May)
Hmm. Brian May must of got some inspiration on this one from Def Leppard, his favorite band at the time. I think he actually did a jam with him back in '91 as well. This song was meant for his solo album, but like Headlong, he heard Freddie singing this, and it became a Queen song. I'm not a huge fan of this song, though I probably listen to it more than 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love'. It's one of those hard rock, love you and hate you, kind of songs. Freddie of course, does a superb job on the vocals.

Apparently, Queen kept trying to mix this song and kept going back to the raw first mix. It wasn't released as a retail single, though it was released as a promo single to radio stations featuring a remix and a remix/edit to the song (and the mixes sound a lot more poppier with cirus-type keyboards in the introduction). It hit #29 on the USA Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks.

"... angel eyes are shining bright"

5. RIDE THE WILD WIND
(Written by Roger Taylor)
A nice Roger Taylor penned song, this is an upbeat song with some nice vocals by Freddie. Not one of the highlights on the album, but it is a great song none-the-less! Apparently, in the Netherlands, it even charted on the radio charts.

"
Yes! There was this magic light!"

6. ALL GOD'S PEOPLE
(Written by Freddie Mercury and Mike Moran)
I never hear too many Queen fans talk about this song... it's one of my favorites. A religious sounding song, this one started back in 1987/88 for Freddie's solo album 'Barcelona'... thus is why it features his good pal, Mike Moran, on keyboards. Maybe at the time, Freddie was thinking "Hmm... on our first couple of albums, we had some religion crap, so since this album is going to be our best, we better add this as a possibility!". I really dig this song and it's one of those Queen songs you can never do an imitation of... genious lyrics and a nice sound going on it. I call the style "christian metal".

"I told you I'd be back to tell you that I still love you"

7. THESE ARE THE DAYS OF OUR LIVES
(Written by Roger Taylor)
This song makes a lot of Queen fans cry... female and male. Especially when watching the music video, as it was the last one Freddie appeared in, and he was almost un-recognizable due to AIDS wasting. He didn't move around much either, due to the pain he was in. Usually in a Queen music video, the guys filming the flick, always have trouble catching up to Freddie as he is hopping and jumping around so much, not the case with this video though. The song is very light and features a very sweet vocal by Freddie. Simple, yet meaningful.

Despite fans thinking of this as a Freddie Mercury penned track, with the style of the lyrics and all, it was actually written by Roger Taylor. It must be said though, that if you go back to the 1975 album, A Night At The Opera, and listen to the song 'Love Of My Life', Freddie sings "When I grow older, I will be there at your side to remind you how I still love you... I still love, you!" And here, the last thing Freddie does in this song is whispers the words "But when I look and I find... I still love you... I still love you."

The song was only released as a single in the United States (except for the other countries being a double a-side with Bohemian Rhapsody) on September 5th, 1991 (Freddie's 45th birthday and the last birthday he got to see), and though it didn't sell many copies as a single, the video was memorable, and there was airplay particularly on the east coast.

"Except when you pee on my chippendale suite!"

8. DELILAH
(Written by Freddie Mercury)
A song Freddie wrote about his cat, Delilah. When you first hear the song, driven by keyboards, you'll think at first it's probably about some woman. But no, it's about his cat. I totally love this song. When Roger first heard this song in the studio, he walked out and didn't come back for several days. This song has a nice guitar solo by Brian which mimicks the "meow meow meow" of a cat. Queen also do some backing vocals doing "meows"... very nice, and I love this song, though you'll probably hate it.

"One day you'll be a sargeant major"

9. DON'T TRY SO HARD
(Written by Freddie Mercury)
You'll probably like this song, I like it, but it's kind of boring to me. Probably my least favorite on the album, the lyrics I particularly am not fond of (love the lyrics in the chorus however). The music is fine. Features a nice falsetto by Freddie. But nothing too exciting.

"Don't be cruel, love me, love me baby, I've been to the hitman school!!!"

10. THE HITMAN
(Written by Freddie Mercury)
If you want to hear Queen doing heavy metal, listen to this song. Not very sophisticated in terms of Queen, but it's something hardcore metal fans can have a jerk to. I think Queen were perhaps even thinking of this being a single back in '91 as it was quite common to hear when Queen were promoting the album. I love the lines like "I'm the head shredder!" and "Come back mother, nuke that sucker!". I love it. I'm sure you will too.

"Spend the rest of our lives together"

11. BIJOU
(Written by Freddie Mercury and Brian May)
This is what most Queen fans call an 'inside-out' song. It's all guitar instrumental during the verses and all, but where the real guitar solo should be, it's Freddie singing some vocals. Very nice. Apparently, most of it was written by Freddie, but some of it by Brian.

"I have to find the will to carry on with the show"

12. THE SHOW MUST GO ON
(Written by Queen)
This is the best song on the album. The ultimate Queen song. Freddie fucking nails the song head on and most of it was recorded as a first take. I don't even have to explain this song, it's so great and can do the talking for you. But I have to say this... the bit where it goes "My soul is painted like wings of butterflies, fairy tales of yesterday will grow but never die".... it makes me think of it as a metaphor to Freddie saying "I'm the fairytale... and though I'll be gone tomorrow, the legend of Queen and I, will always get stronger, there's no end... the show will go on". The song did hit #2 on the Billboard Top 100 Singles in 1992.

Best Album in 2008: Brian Wilson - 'That Lucky Old Sun'

In my opinion, Brian Wilson's 'That Lucky Old Sun'. I was excited to hear about it's release and I went right out and bought the album, and I also got a 7" (45 rpm) promo single of 'Midnight's Another Day' b/w 'That Lucky Old Son' and 'Morning Beat' ... the promo single on transparent orange vinyl, with nice artwork on the sleeve. The album was released on CD and LP, though I've only got the CD. I will buy the LP version later on. The album is total California life. It remininces on Brian's past in California, as well as his mental instabilities. It features narratives recited by Brian, while the words were written by Van Dyke Parks.

Recommended Songs - "Forever She'll Be My Surfer Girl"... it features Brian Wilson back in top form with his popular falsetto. "Midnight's Another Day"... a song in which Brian sings about his past instabilities, drug abuse, and mental instabilities and in-capabilities. "Going Home" ... a nice mainstream rocker.

Queen

The photo on the top of the screen is the rock band, Queen. MY FAVORITE BAND!

I pre-ordered a release of Queen's First E.P. (Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy)... it was released I think in 1977 in the UK, but here in the USA it was never released, so it's being released now and it should arrive in my mail box sometime next week.
